This week, we rewind the clock to August of 1980.

  • 42nd Street opened at the Winter Garden Theatre on August 25th, 1980.
  • It would transfer to the Majestic Theatre in 1981 and then to the St. James Theatre in 1987.
  • The show ran for almost 3,500 performances before closing on January 8th, 1989.
  • At the 1981 Tony Awards, it was nominated for eight Tony Awards, winning two, including Best Musical.
  • 42nd Street starred Broadway star Jerry Orbach, whose previous credits included Guys and Dolls, Annie Get Your Gun, and Chicago.
