During this time of social distancing, we’ve all had to adapt to find activities that we’re able to have fun with while at home. While there are many resources out there to stream your favorite Broadway shows, sometimes you may just need a break from staring at the screen. For this article, we’ve compiled a list of the best Broadway-themed activities you can enjoy with your family and loved ones at home, that don’t necessarily include a computer or TV screen.
Broadway Costumes To Make At Home
While we don’t all have access to the luxe costumes that we see on stage, we can for sure fashion similar ones with things we may already have at home. Try your hand at finding anything and everything pink to become Regina George from Mean Girls, black for Lydia Deetz from Beetlejuice, or a classic white button-up and black tie for the Mormons from The Book of Mormon. Find your favorite Broadway characters to dress up as with your family. Be creative and make an adventure out of fashioning pieces you may have in the back of your closet to make a new costume!
Put On Your Own Show
While you’re all dressed up in your makeshift costumes, why not put on a show? Try singing and acting in the comfort of your own home. Make a home video with your families to remember this time, and hey, it might even go viral on TikTok. If you have little ones at home, they may love this time to be able to pretend they are Elsa and sing “Let It Go” to their hearts desire. Make a set in your backyard and see if they want to flaunt their talent! Or, maybe this is the perfect time to introduce the youngest members of your family to the wonders of theatre. Sing your favorite tune, or play them your favorite Broadway songs for them to enjoy.
Try Your Hand At Broadway Makeup
From the intense makeup done for Rafiki over at The Lion King to the more understated smokey eye that Janis Sarkisian rocks in Mean Girls, why not use your free time to try out stage makeup? There are so many Broadway makeup tutorials on YouTube, you’re likely to get sucked into a rabbit hole of seeing what actors, and even fans, are doing to get that stage-ready look. You’re at home, so no one (except your family) can see any mistakes you may make. Run wild!
Enjoy Themed Broadway Snacks
If you’re using your time at home trying to bake goodies you’ve never had time for before, maybe try adding a few touches to make them Broadway-themed. These are perfect for a midday sweet treat or after your at-home performance with your family. Use leftover frosting to recreate the Broadway sign, show logos, and more! If you have Oreos, using gold frosting on top would make a perfect faux Tony Award to give to your kid as the easiest reward for a great show.
Color Your Stress Away
If you’ve heard of the recent coloring craze, you know that coloring can be meditative and highly calming. If you’re looking for a stress-reliever, try pulling out your colored pencils, markers, and crayons to tackle these Broadway-inspired coloring pages. Just because Broadway’s currently closed, doesn’t mean we can’t celebrate the magic of theatre while at home practicing social distancing. Make use of the extra time on your hands if you have it, and it’s just a matter of time until we can be back on Broadway soon.
