Grey Henson has spent the last few months treading the boards as one of the storytellers in the new musical Shucked, now playing at the Nederlander Theatre. Audiences will recognize Henson for his turn as Elder McKinley in The Book of Mormon and most notably for his Tony Award-nominated performance as Damian Hubbard in the original Broadway cast of Mean Girls.
Henson took some time to answer 5 Questions with Broadway Direct, telling us his very own Cinderella story, his inspiring dressing roommate, and the spots in New York he loves most.
1. What inspired you to become an actor?
I saw a community theatre production of Cinderella in my hometown of Macon, GA when I was three years old. I then told people I wanted to be Cinderella when I grew up, which I now interpret to mean I wanted to be an actor. Still open to becoming a princess, though.
2. Who in your field inspires you?
Currently inspired by my Shucked dressing roommate John Behlmann. Not only is he incredibly talented and smart, but to me, he sets the standard for how to carry yourself professionally in this industry. I’ve learned so much from him. He’s a leader in the building, a company cheerleader, and an all-around phenomenal human being.
3. What will audiences be most excited about seeing in Shucked?
Expect to be charmed! I think what’s most exciting about Shucked is that it’s a completely original new musical.
4. If you didn’t need to sleep at night, what would you spend your time doing?
Reading all the books I pretend to read but never finish.
5. What is your favorite NYC spot?
You can catch Grey Henson in Shucked, now playing at the Nederlander Theatre.
