A Stranger Things Play Is Coming to Broadway — Here’s What We Know

Viewers all over the world have fallen in love with the TV series Stranger Things, the cultural phenomenon that first premiered on Netflix in the summer of 2016. Now, a new story in the Stranger Things universe is coming to Broadway.

Currently playing to great success in London’s West End, Stranger Things: The First Shadow is making the leap to New York City in the spring. Here’s what we know.

Stranger Things: The First Shadow will open on Broadway April 22, 2025. It will begin preview performances on March 28.

Who will be in the cast?

Casting for the Broadway production has not been announced yet. Characters who fans might recognize from the Netflix series include Henry Creel, James “Jim” Hopper Jr., Joyce Maldonado (Joyce Byers’s maiden name), Bob Newby, and Dr. Brenner.

What is Stranger Things: The First Shadow about?

Based on an original story by the Duffer Brothers, Jack Thorne, and Kate Trefry, and rooted in the mythology and world of the show, Stranger Things: The First Shadow explores events that took place decades before the story told in the TV series. As described by the production: “Before the world turned upside down. Hawkins, 1959: a regular town with regular worries. Young Jim Hopper’s car won’t start, Bob Newby’s sister won’t take his radio show seriously, and Joyce Maldonado just wants to graduate and get the hell out of town. When new student Henry Creel arrives, his family finds that a fresh start isn’t so easy … and the shadows of the past have a very long reach.”

Who is on the creative team of Stranger Things: The First Shadow?

Tony Award winner Stephen Daldry helmed the West End production and will return to direct the Broadway premiere, codirected by Justin Martin. The play, written by Kate Trefry, will feature set design by Miriam Buether; costume design by Brigitte Reiffenstuel; lighting design by Jon Clark; sound design by Paul Arditti; original music composition, orchestration, arrangements, and supervision by D.J. Walde; illusions design and visual effects by Jamie Harrison and Chris Fisher; video design and visual effects by 59; choreography by Coral Messam; movement direction by Lynne Page; and wig, hair, and makeup design by Campbell Young Associates.
