Before You Go: Hamilton on Broadway

Getting ready to go or considering buying a ticket to Hamilton on Broadway? We have your guide for everything you need to know ahead of your show at the Richard Rodgers Theatre.

What’s the story?

A Tony Award–sweeping remix on American history, this clever musical featuring the Founding Fathers — focusing on Alexander Hamilton — boasts a groundbreaking score by Lin-Manuel Miranda, fusing classical Broadway elements with catchy hip-hop hooks. With imaginative choreography, showstopping rapping and vocals, and a tightly paced story, Hamilton is an unforgettable theatrical experience, and the most exciting history lesson you’ll ever sit through.

Hamilton features a book, music, and lyrics by Miranda, direction by Thomas Kail, choreography by Andy Blankenbuhler, orchestrations by Alex Lacamoire, scenic design by David Korins, costume design by Paul Tazewell, and lighting design by Howell Binkley.

Why should I see Hamilton?

Whether you’re an avid musical fan or a theater newbie seeking a fun night out on your trip to New York, Hamilton has become a cultural phenomenon for a reason. Its original cast recording broke into the mainstream in the mid 2010s — a rare feat for a modern musical — thanks to its (pun-unintended) revolutionary fusion of two genres of music that have not often intersected. With just the music alone, anyone is bound to be hooked. But come for the music, and stay for everything else, because Hamilton hits all the marks.

What is Hamilton best known for?

Hamilton has earned worldwide acclaim for its all-star creative team, including its score and book by Miranda, who has also earned acclaim for his contributions to Disney’s Moana and Encanto. Miranda spent years researching Hamilton’s story, demonstrating earnest commitment to capturing the heart of Hamilton’s efforts to make his mark on American history.

Miranda also sought to put a spin on the lack of racial diversity in America’s political power structure by casting all non-white actors as the Founding Fathers. This elevated the story’s criticisms of the oppressive origins of America’s foundation and brought long-awaited diversity to the Broadway stage.
