Hold on to your hoop skirts, Maya Rudolph is coming to Broadway! Making her official Broadway debut, the six-time Emmy Award winner will step into the role of Mary Todd Lincoln in Cole Escola’s Oh, Mary! over at the Lyceum Theatre for a limited 8-week engagement beginning April 28, 2026.
“Ever since I was a little girl I have dreamed of being Cole Escola,” she joked. “Oh, Mary! is the funniest play I have ever seen, and I have seen a lot of plays, you’d be surprised. It’s such an honor to play the role of Mary, especially after so many iconic Marys have come before me. So making my Broadway debut in the role of a lifetime – as a miserable, suffocated, alcoholic woman – is a real dream come true.”
John Cameron Mitchell will play his final performance on April 26. The production has also announced an additional extension, with tickets now on sale through January 3, 2027. Tickets can be found here.
What is Oh, Mary! on Broadway about?
Oh, Mary! is a dark comedy about a miserable, suffocated Mary Todd Lincoln in the weeks leading up to Abraham Lincoln’s assassination. Unrequited yearning, alcoholism, and suppressed desires abound in this 80-minute one-act play that finally examines the forgotten life and dreams of Mrs. Lincoln, through the lens of an idiot (playwright Cole Escola).
Declared “one of the best comedies in years” by The New York Times, Oh, Mary! received Tony Awards for Best Leading Actor in a Play (Cole Escola) and Best Direction of a Play (Sam Pinkleton), Drama League Awards for Outstanding Play and Outstanding Direction of a Play, as well as a special citation from the New York Drama Critics’ Circle. It was named a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize for Drama.
