Patti LuPone on Late Night

Watch Now: Patti LuPone Reflects on Years of Working with Stephen Sondheim

Two-time Tony Award winner and Broadway icon Patti LuPone stars in the Broadway revival of Company which recently opened at the Bernard B. Jacobs Theatre. LuPone stopped by Late Night with Seth Meyers to talk of her return to Broadway in Company, her professional history with the legendary composer Stephen Sondheim, and her viral videos filmed during the pandemic.

The cast of Company is led by Tony Award winners Katrina Lenk and Patti LuPone, who star as Bobbie and Joanne, respectively, and are joined by Matt Doyle as Jamie, Tony nominee Christopher Fitzgerald as David, Tony nominee Christopher Sieber as Harry, Tony nominee Jennifer Simard as Sarah, Terence Archie as Larry, Etai Benson as Paul, Nikki Renée Daniels as Jenny, Claybourne Elder as Andy, Greg Hildreth as Peter, Rashidra Scott as Susan, Bobby Conte as P.J., and Manu Narayan as Theo.

The musical comedy Company, written by Stephen Sondheim and George Furth in 1970, was re-conceived by director Marianne Elliot for a critically acclaimed run in London that transferred to Broadway. The big change in this production is that Bobby, the lead character, is played by a woman, Bobbie. At Bobbie’s (Katrina Lenk) 35th birthday party, all her friends are wondering why isn’t she married? Why can’t she find the right man? And, why can’t she settle down and have a family? This whip-smart musical comedy, given a game-changing makeover for a modern-day Manhattan, features some of Sondheim’s best-loved songs, including “Company,” “You Could Drive a Person Crazy,” “The Ladies Who Lunch,” “Side by Side,” and the iconic “Being Alive.”
