Krystina Alabado is so fetch! You may know her from Mean Girls on Broadway, where she stars as Gretchen Weiners at the August Wilson Theatre. More recently, she has joined the production of A Killer Party: A Murder Mystery Musical, streaming now. She plays Lily Wright in this killer new digital musical.

Krystina tells Broadway Direct about how she started singing at 8 years old, missing Mean Girls, and taking an inside look at A Killer Party: A Murder Mystery Musical.
1. What inspired you to become an actress?
Well, I have been singing since I was 8 years old! My dad is a musician in the Phoenix area, and my first performance was when I was 8 and I was his special guest and sang a duet with him and his band so singing has always been a part of my life! As I got older, I found theatre in school, and I fell in love, it was where I felt like I belonged at the time, and finally, I figured out that I was actually good at it, and I never stopped. The arts are something that has always been such a large part of my life, and being able to play and allow the audience to escape for 2 1/2 hours is so special to me.
2. Who in your field inspires you?
So many people! My biggest inspirations are honestly my colleagues. It is amazing to look around on stage sometimes and see how many incredibly talented people I get to share the stage with. it is humbling and inspiring and so special.
3. What will audiences be most excited about seeing in Mean Girls?
Well seeing any Broadway show once everything is back will be like a party. I mean, I daydream about that first night back and what a celebration it is going to be! I miss Mean Girls every day, Gretchen is such a fun part and I truly can’t wait to bring her back! I feel like if I was an audience member, I would buy tickets for when all of this ends and we come back, it will be a huge part on Broadway!
4. What are some things you’ve always wanted to do that you’re able to spend time on now?
It has been quite an adventure since COVID, I spent the first 2 months quarantined in my apartment in NYC, and then my husband and I drove across the country and have been on the West Coast ever since, LA specifically. I have always wanted to live in Cali so moving here temporarily has been really cool. A big part of this time actually has been spent on new and creative projects, people are thinking outside the box and it is amazing! The second week of all of this madness, Kait Kerrigan reached out to me asking if I wanted to embark on a project with her that was crazy and fun and a big ol’ experiment and I said yes!
And now four months later, we independently, out of our own homes, with all our own equipment, some with roommates helping, some COMPLETELY on their own, shot a 10 person, 9 episode original MUSICAL called A Killer Party: A Murder Mystery Musical. The first episode just came out and I am SO proud of every single theatre professional that worked on this project! We had no idea how it would actually come together, and I’ve gotta say, it was so much fun, and watching it is fun! I hope theatre audiences and fans purchase the subscription (it’s only $12 for the whole season!) to get their theatre fix! It is pretty fascinating to watch because we are doing scene work with each other without ever seeing anyone, it’s pretty amazing!
5. What NYC spot are you missing most now?
The theatre district for sure, all of our go-to hangouts and bars after the show. My heart misses it all so much. I just keep holding onto the idea that this IS temporary. It will never be exactly the same, but this time will be a thing of the past soon.
