Ain’t Supposed to Die a Natural Death Broadway Revival Coming Soon

Martin Van Peebles’ musical Ain’t Supposed to Die a Natural Death is on its way to being revived on Broadway. Tony winner Kenny Leon will direct this upcoming production, with Lia Vollack to produce.

Dates, casting, and a theatre have yet to be announced.

The son of the musical composer and book writer, Mario Van Peebles, will serve as creative producer.

In a statement, Kenny Leon said, “Ever since I heard the name Melvin Van Peebles, I have equated it with excellence, beauty, and courage. I am grateful to have this opportunity along with my creative team to introduce to some, and re-introduce to others, the richness of this unique musical experience.”

The musical originally premiered in 1971 at the Ethel Barrymore Theatre. It received seven Tony Award nominations, including Best Musical.

Ain’t Supposed to Die a Natural Death is a series of 19 politically outspoken, darkly comic, and sexually charged musical monologues that explore the negative aspects of African-American street life and the ghetto experience. Each character has a painful story to tell in funk, soul, jazz and blues-inflected songs.
