Getting ready to go or considering buying a ticket to Wicked on Broadway? We have your guide for everything you need to know ahead of your show at the Gershwin Theatre.
What’s the story?
It’s a precursor to The Wizard of Oz, focusing on a certain infamous Wicked Witch and her “good” counterpart. The hit Stephen Schwartz musical follows the journey of Elphaba, an Ozian student with exciting — and daunting — powers as she attends Shiz University, where she becomes acquainted with Glinda Upland, a popular and seemingly pompous girl who is also learning to harness her power. Together, they form an unexpected bond that leads them on a path that may change their lives — and the land of Oz — forever.
Based on Gregory Maguire’s novel Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West, Wicked features a book by Winnie Holzman, music and lyrics by Schwartz, direction by Joe Mantello, and choreography by Wayne Cilento.
Why should I see Wicked?
Over the past 20 years, Wicked has established itself as one of the most successful, widely known, and culturally impactful musicals of our time. Not only is it a staple in the “musical theater starter pack,” it’s also simply popular for a clear reason: its all-around excellence, from its set and special effects to its showstopping leads and bona fide ensemble. By getting a ticket to Wicked, you’re nearly guaranteed to have a “thrillifying” experience (don’t worry, you’ll get the reference later).

What is Wicked best known for?
When one thinks of Wicked, a few things immediately come to mind: powerful vocals, a dazzling score that beautifully illustrates the magical world of Oz, wildly impressive special effects, and a strong story of friendship, courage, and self-discovery that anyone can relate to.
Wicked initially opened on Broadway in 2003, starring Idina Menzel as Elphaba and Kristin Chenoweth as Glinda. It received 10 Tony Award nominations in 2004, winning best actress in a musical for Menzel, best scenic design for Eugene Lee, and best costume design for Susan Hilferty. It’s one of those musicals that fans can’t quite believe didn’t win Best Musical, considering its legacy — but hey, Avenue Q is great too!

What are the nitty-gritty details (time, location, etc.)?
Wicked currently runs six days a week at the Gershwin Theatre — Broadway’s largest house! It offers evening performances every day except Tuesdays, and additional matinee performances on Saturdays and Sundays. However, it’s important to check the performance calendar, as holiday schedules can vary.
The show runs two hours and 45 minutes, with one 15-minute intermission. The bar offers drinks and snacks if you need a quick fix at intermission. It’s best to arrive at the theatre 30 minutes before the performance begins so you have plenty of time to go through security, use the restroom, and find your seat.

If you are driving to the theatre, there are several parking garages located nearby, check out options from our parking partner SpotHero to reserve parking ahead of your show. If you are traveling by subway, the nearest stop is the 50th Street station, where the C and E stop. However, if it is more convenient to arrive at the 42nd Street station, it is a quick eight-block walk north.
Does the theatre have accessibility accommodations?
The Gershwin Theatre is fully wheelchair-accessible, with limited wheelchair seating available in the Orchestra and Mezzanine and up to three companion seats per wheelchair seat. For those who are hearing- or visually impaired, free devices are available on the second level of the theatre. For those using hearing aids, the Gershwin is also equipped with an Induction Loop System, which can be connected directly to the performance audio by switching the hearing aid to “T.”
For non–English speakers, translation devices can be located on the second level of the theatre, currently offering the musical in Japanese, German, Portuguese, Spanish, French, Mandarin, and Korean.
