Broadway at the 2022 Emmys! A Guide for Theatre and TV Lovers

Coming right off Tony Awards season, the entertainment world has now entered Emmy Awards season! The Emmys celebrate the best of TV and just like last year, Broadway favorites can be found in the line-up of this year’s starry nominees.

Schmigadoon!, the Apple TV+ musical TV show that was recently renewed for a second season, received four nominations including Outstanding Production Design For A Narrative Program (Half-Hour), Outstanding Music Composition For A Series (Original Dramatic Score), Outstanding Original Music And Lyrics, and Outstanding Choreography For Scripted Programming.

Tony Award winner Andrew Garfield, coming off his second Oscar nomination for playing Jonathan Larson in the movie musical tick, tick…BOOM!, received his first Emmy nomination for his performance as Jeb Pyre in Under the Banner of Heaven. Nominated for Outstanding Lead Actor In A Limited Or Anthology Series Or Movie, fellow nominees include Oscar Isaac, a New York stage veteran, and Sebastian Stan, who starred on Broadway in Talk Radio and Picnic.

The Hulu TV show Only Murders in the Building received four acting nominations, each of the nominees having Broadway credits to boast. Steve Martin, playwright of Meteor Shower and Tony-nominated for Broadway’s Bright Star, and Martin Short, four Broadway credits including a Tony Award-winning performance in Little Me, both received nominations for Outstanding Lead Actor In A Comedy Series. Current Funny Girl star Jane Lynch and three-time Tony Award winner Nathan Lane also received nominations for their guest-starring roles on the show.

Broadway veterans can also be found in each of the Supporting Actress categories. Sheryl Lee Ralph, best known for originating the role of Deena Jones in Dreamgirls and most recently appearing on Broadway as Madame Morrible in Wicked, received her first Emmy nomination for her turn as Barbarba Howard in Abbott Elementary. Ralph is nominated for Outstanding Supporting Actress In A Comedy Series alongside the most recent winner of the award, Hannah Waddingham, who was seen on Broadway in Spamalot! and is an established theater actress in London’s West End. Continuing down the Supporting Actress categories, Christina Ricci and J. Smith Cameron in Outstanding Supporting Actress In A Drama Series and Jennifer Coolidge and 2022 Tony Award nominee Mare Winningham in Outstanding Supporting Actress In A Limited Or Anthology Series Or Movie all have been seen on the Broadway stage.

In addition to the ones mentioned previously, nominated actresses across all categories you may recognize from the Broadway stage include Jean Smart, Jane Adams, Harriet Sansom Harris, two-time Tony Award winner Laurie Metcalf, Harriet Walter, Jodie Comer, who makes her Broadway debut next spring, five-time Tony Award nominee Laura Linney, Hope Davis, Tony Award winner Marcia Gay Harden, Sanaa Lathan, Toni Collette, and Sarah Paulson. Nominated actors include Tony Award winner Tony Shalhoub, Henry Wrinkler, Brian Cox, Jeremy Strong, Billy Crudup, John Turturro Christopher Walken, James Cromwell, Colman Domingo, Arian Moayed, Tom Pelphrey, Murray Bartlett, Peter Sarsgaard, Michael Stuhlbarg, and Steve Zahn.
