Broadway at the 2023 Emmys! A Guide for Theater and TV Lovers

Today the nominations for the 75th Emmy Awards were announced with many Broadway names to be found.

Schmigadoon!, the Apple TV+ musical TV show, received three nominations including Outstanding Choreography For Scripted Programming, Outstanding Cinematography For A Series (Half-Hour), and Outstanding Production Design For A Narrative Program (Half-Hour).

Annaleigh Ashford, current star of Sweeney Todd on Broadway, received a nomination for Outstanding Supporting Actress In A Limited Or Anthology Series Or Movie for her performance on the Hulu Series Welcome to Chippendales. This marks the Tony Award winner’s first Emmy nomination.

Jessica Chastain and Arian Moayed, coming off their Tony Award-nominated performances for this past season’s A Doll’s House, each received nominations, with Chastain nominated for Outstanding Lead Actress In A Limited Or Anthology Series Or Movie for her performance in George & Tammy, and Moayed for Outstanding Guest Actor In A Drama Series for his performance in Succession.

Speaking of Succession, a slew of Broadway veterans show up in their nominated actors, with leading actors Brian Cox, Kieran Culkin, and Jeremy Strong, who returns to Broadway next year in An Enemy of the Peoplereceiving nominations as well as J. Smith Cameron, James Cromwell, Cherry Jones, Alan Ruck, and Harriet Walter.

Pedro Pascal, who made his Broadway debut in 2019 in King Lear, racked up two Emmy nominations this year, one for Outstanding Lead Actor In A Drama Series for his much-talked-about role on The Last of Us, and another for Outstanding Guest Actor In A Comedy Series for his turn as host on Saturday Night Live this season.

After her Emmy win last year, Sheryl Lee Ralph, best known to Broadway fans for originating the role of Deena Jones in Dreamgirls, received another nomination for Outstanding Supporting Actress In A Comedy Series nomination for her role as Barbara Howard on Abbott Elementary. In that same category, Hannah Waddingham, star of the West End stage and seen on Broadway in Spamalot, received her third nomination for her performance on Ted Lasso.

Daniel Radcliffe, who will return to Broadway this season in the highly-anticipated revival of Merrily We Roll Along, received his first Emmy nomination for his performance as Al Yankovic in the TV movie Weird: The Al Yankovic Story, for which he has already won multiple awards including the Critics Choice Award earlier this year.

Only Murders in the Building features many Broadway talents and this year two received Emmy nominations for the show’s second season: Martin Short for Outstanding Lead Actor In A Comedy Series and Nathan Lane for Outstanding Guest Actor In A Comedy Series, which he also won last year.

In addition to the ones mentioned previously, nominated actresses across all categories you may recognize from the Broadway stage include Christina Applegate, Becky Ann Baker, Rachel Brosnahan, Jennifer Coolidge, Claire Danes, Meghann Fahy, Kathryn Hahn, Judith Light, Elisabeth Moss, and Keri Russell. Nominated actors include F. Murray Abraham, Murray Bartlett, Ray Liotta, Oliver Platt, Michael Shannon, and Henry Wrinkler.

The 75th Emmy Awards are currently scheduled to air on Monday, September 18 on Fox.
