On Juneteenth, Broadway Black premiered the first-ever Antonyo Awards, to celebrate the black theatre community. Nominations were announced on June 9, and winners were chosen by a public vote.
Winners of the night include Tina – The Tina Turner Musical for Best Musical, with Adrienne Warren for Best Actor in a Musical for the title role. The Public Theater’s Off-Broadway production For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide/when the rainbow is enuf won five wins overall, including Best Revival. Aziza Barnes’ BLKS won Best Play.
