Broadway Stars with Albums You Need to Know

Broadway musicals have grown a large following, and theatre fans across the world can name their favorite stars and what characters they are best known for. However, aside from being featured on their Broadway cast albums, these stars have branched out and created their own solo music in their own styles. They are a must-listen for all fans and another way that we can get a dose of Broadway while it remains closed due to the pandemic. The list of amazing albums from talented Broadway stars is endless, but in this article, we highlight a few of our favorites that you can dive into and enjoy.

Shoshana Bean

Shoshana Bean’s voice can be heard across many projects, with three solo albums released. You may remember her from her recent limited engagement playing the role of Jenna in the musical Waitress last year or when she played the iconic role of Elphaba in Wicked in 2005. Her most recent album, Spectrum was released in 2018 and features her signature vocals on reimagined takes like Foy Vance’s “Make It Rain” alongside her own original songs like “Remember the Day.”

Laura Bell Bundy

Most known for her Tony Award-nominated role as Elle Woods in Legally Blonde, Laura Bell Bundy is no stranger to releasing her own studio albums. This star has released 5 albums already. Her most recent album Another Piece of Me, was released in 2015, and she has another one coming very soon. Her new album, Women of Tomorrow, will be released in Spring of 2021, but you can listen to her new single now. The song, “Get It Girl, You Go” features Anika Noni Rose and Shoshana Bean, and mixes ‘50s and ‘60s aesthetics with a 2020 catchy girl-power message.

Kristin Chenoweth

Kristin Chenoweth is no stranger to releasing her own albums, and with 7 of them under her belt, there is no shortage of her amazing soprano to enjoy. Her most recent, Kristin Chenoweth: For The Girls, pays tribute to many of the strong female artists who inspired her as an entertainer, such as Dolly Parton, Judy Garland, Barbra Streisand, and more. Along with the release of this album, she brought the music live to Broadway, with her own residency at the Nederlander Theatre in late 2019.

Sutton Foster

This two-time Tony Award-winner and star of tv show Younger released her most recent solo album, Take Me To the World in 2018. She features her own vocal stylings on musical classics such as Stephen Sondheim’s Take Me to the World and Cole Porter’s “Ooh-La-La.” Along with the classics, she also highlights legendary pop songwriters such as James Taylor and Paul Simon. Sutton’s long-awaited third album takes listeners on a personal journey inspired by the birth of her daughter.

Audra McDonald

Six-time Tony Award-winner Audra McDonald is not unfamiliar to releasing her own solo albums. She has six of her own albums, with Sing Happy as her most recent one. Sing Happy is a live album and was released in 2018, and features McDonald’s highlights in her career in the live concert recording with the New York Philharmonic Orchestra. From La Cage aux Folles’ “I Am What I Am,” to She Loves Me’s “Vanilla Ice Cream,” she includes musical moments of songs she has never recorded before, along with hits that she revisits, such as 110 in the Shade’s “Simple Little Things.” 

Leslie Odom Jr.

Most known for his Tony Award-winning role as Aaron Burr in Hamilton, Leslie Odom Jr. has released three of his own albums, and in turn, has continued to bless the world with his amazing voice. His most recent album, Mr, filled with his own original songs, was released in late 2019 and features a sultry jazz feel, mixed with pop, Broadway, and R&B inspirations.

Ben Platt

Ben Platt, known for playing Evan Hansen in the Tony Award-winning musical Dear Evan Hansen as well as Payton Hobart in the Netflix show The Politician, has continued to produce music that is sure to please your ears. His debut studio album, Sing to Me Instead, was released in early 2019. A deluxe version of this album was also released when his Netflix special, Ben Platt: Live from Radio City Music Hall, premiered in May 2020. 

Anthony Ramos

Anthony Ramos has been busy during quarantine, with his newest single released just last Friday, called “Stop.” You may know from his role in the original Broadway cast in Hamilton where he plays John Laurens/Philip Hamilton. He is also starring in the upcoming film, In the Heights as Usnavi. His most recent album, The Good and the Bad was released in 2019 as a pop album, and he has also released many music videos for the album, (one featuring his fiance and Hamilton co-star, Jasmine Cephas Jones!)
