Broderick and Parker to Star in Plaza Suite

Plaza Suite, one of Neil Simon’s most-enduring comedies, will be returning to Broadway in the spring of 2020. Coming along for the ride will be husband and wife Matthew Broderick and Sarah Jessica Parker, under the direction of Tony Award winner John Benjamin Hickey (The Normal Heart). With a pre-Broadway stint at Boston’s Emerson Colonial Theatre, the production will begin previews at Broadway’s Hudson Theatre on March 13, 2020 toward an April 13 opening.

Broderick, who enjoyed a three-decade long collaboration with the playwright Neil Simon, shared these thoughts “It was my great good fortune that my very first Broadway play was written by Neil Simon. He also wrote my first film. I owe him a career. The theater has lost a brilliantly funny, unthinkably wonderful writer and even after all this time I feel I have lost a mentor, a father figure, a deep influence in my life and work.”

Matthew Broderick is a two-time Tony Award-winning actor for his starring roles in Brighton Beach Memoirs and How to Succeed in Business without Really Trying. Other Broadway appearances include Biloxi Blues, Night Must Fall, The Producers, The Foreigner, The Odd Couple, Nice Work If You Can Get it, and It’s Only A Play. He is also well-known for film roles such as Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, Wargames, Ladyhawke, Glory, The Lion King, and Election.

Sarah Jessica Parker made her Broadway debut in 1976 in The Innocents. She went on to play the title role in Annie during that musical’s original run. Other Broadway appearances include performing with Matthew Broderick in How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying, and a star-turn in a revival of Once Upon a Mattress. Of course, most people recognize her for her role in the TV series Sex and the City. Parker has also appeared in such films as Footloose, Ed Wood, Honeymoon in Vegas, and The Family Stone.

The design team for Plaza Suite is two-time Tony Award winner John Lee Beatty (set design), Tony Award winner Jane Greenwood (costume design), five-time Tony Award winner Brian MacDevitt (lighting design), Tony Award winner Scott Lehrer (sound design), and Jim Carnahan(casting director).

“Two world-class actors play three hilarious couples in this uproarious and piercing look at love and marriage from legendary playwright and Pulitzer Prize winner Neil Simon. This new production will mark the first revival of a Neil Simon play following his passing last August at the age 91. He is remembered as one of the most celebrated, successful, and beloved writers in Broadway history having written more than 30 plays and musicals.”
