Lin-Manuel Miranda is finally letting the cat out of the bag, bit by bit, with some details on the forthcoming In the Heights film. According to Miranda’s Twitter account, In the Heights will begin filming this summer, on location in Washington Heights, New York. He has also named four members of the leading cast: Anthony Ramos will play Usnavi, Melissa Barrera will play Vanessa, Corey Hawkins will play Benny and Leslie Grace is slated for Nina Rosario. Miranda’s tweet also teased that more information is “coming soon.”

With Jon M. Chu (Crazy Rich Asians, G.I. Joe: Retaliation) set to direct, and a screenplay by Marc Klein, the film is expected to be released sometime in 2020. Recent news also has actor Jimmy Smits rumored to be in talks to join the film as Nina’s father.
In the Heights, which opened on Broadway in 2008, went on to win the Tony Award for Best Musical, running for 1,184 performances. The musical features a book by Quiara Alegria Hudes and a score by Lin-Manuel Miranda (Hamilton). Miranda, Mandy Gonzalez, Christopher Jackson, Karen Olivo, Olga Merediz, Carlos Gomez, Priscilla Lopez, Robin de Jesus, Andrea Burns, Janet Decal, Seth Stewart, and Eliseo Roman were in a cast directed by Thomas Kail and choreographed by Andy Blankenbuehler.
