Cats to Stream Next on The Shows Must Go On

Andrew Lloyd Webber’s YouTube channel, The Shows Must Go On, continues its programming this Friday, May 15 with Cats. The show will stream at 2 PM (EDT), and the recording will remain accessible for 48 hours.

The 1998 direct-to-video musical film features a lineup of cast members from various international stage productions, who were invited to reprise their stage roles. The cast includes Elaine Paige, who originated the role of Grizabella in the West End, Susan Jane Tanner, who originated the role of Jellylorum in the West End, and Ken Page, who originated the role of Old Deuteronomy on Broadway. The production also features John Mills, for whom the film was his Cats debut.

The film is based on the 1981 stage musical Cats by Andrew Lloyd Webber, which is based on the 1939 collection of poetry Old Possum’s Book of Practical Cats by T. S. Eliot. Andrew Lloyd Webber himself oversaw orchestration for the film and called on Gillian Lynne, the show’s original choreographer, to choreograph the film. David Mallet served as the director of this production.

Cats had its world premiere in the West End in 1981 before opening on Broadway in 1982. The Broadway production ran for 18 years, closing in 2000, making it one of Broadway’s longest-running shows.

Cats will be the seventh installment of The Show Must Go On web series, following Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, Jesus Christ Superstar, The Phantom of the Opera, Love Never Dies, Andrew Lloyd Webber — The Royal Albert Hall Celebration, and most recently, By Jeeves.
