DeBose, Garfield, & West Side Story Among Golden Globe Winners

The winners of the 2022 Golden Globes were revealed on Sunday, January 9, 2022. Due to criticisms against the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, the group of international journalists who vote on the awards, the 2022 awards were held as a private event instead of a broadcast ceremony.

The winners, instead announced online, included some Broadway favorites. Ariana DeBose, who has been racking up many awards already for her performance as Anita in West Side Story, received the Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actress in a Motion Picture. West Side Story also took home the award for Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy along with newcomer Rachel Zegler winning Best Actress in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy for her performance in the film.

Tony Award winner Andrew Garfield was also honored at this year’s Golden Globes, winning the award for Best Actor in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy for his performance as Jonathan Larson in tick, tick…BOOM!  Pose leading lady and theatre veteran Michaela Jaé Rodriguez (who also happened to star in tick, tick…BOOM!) won Best Performance By an Actress in a Television Series – Drama, becoming the first trans actress to win a Golden Globe.

Lin-Manuel Miranda, no stranger to award shows, was represented in two ways this year, with his directorial debut tick, tick…BOOM! being nominated for Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy and Encanto, featuring music and lyrics by the Hamilton creator, winning the award for Best Motion Picture – Animated.
