Of the many movie musicals set to hit the big screens in 2020, the new West Side Story, directed by three-time Oscar winner Steven Spielberg with a screenplay by Tony Kushner, is one of the most highly-anticipated releases of the year.
Since the June 2019 release of a promotional photo of stars Ansel Elgort (as Tony) and Rachel Zegler (as Maria) alongside several supporting castmates, fans have been waiting with bated breath for more preliminary glimpses of the film.
This classic story is an adaptation of the 1957 Broadway musical written by Arthur Laurents with music by Leonard Bernstein and Stephen Sondheim, and is also a remake of the 1961 film adaptation, known for the iconic direction of Robert Wise and choreography of Jerome Robbins.
West Side Story takes place on the Upper West Side of Manhattan and tells the story of two rival gangs of young men, the Jets and the Sharks, and the star-crossed lovers, Tony and Maria, who become mixed up in this long-standing rivalry.
This new West Side Story is scheduled to hit theatres in December of 2020.
