Gaten Matarazzo to Depart Sweeney Todd on Broadway

Limited time remains to catch this Stranger Things favorite in the Broadway revival of Sweeney Todd. Gaten Matarazzo announced today that he will play his final performance as Tobias in Sweeney Todd on November 5, 2023. His replacement will be announced at a later date.

In his Instagram post announcing his departure, Matarazzo said “Words can’t express how much this has meant to me. I’ve dreamt of doing this show since I was a little kid. I could’ve never imagined, however that I would get to do it with a company full of people I’ve admired my entire life and career…I doubt I’ll ever wake up from this pinch me moment I’ve been living in since we started this process in January.”

This comes fresh off the news of Josh Groban and Annaleigh Ashford’s departure, it being revealed last week that the revival’s leads will play their final performance this upcoming January.

The current cast of Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street includes Groban as Sweeney Todd and Ashford as Mrs. Lovett, Matarazzo as Tobias, Daniel Yearwood (Hamilton) as Anthony, Tony Award winner and Laurence Olivier Award nominee Ruthie Ann Miles (The King and I) as Beggar Woman, Maria Bilbao (On Your Feet!) as Johanna, Jamie Jackson (The Last Ship) as Judge Turpin, John Rapson (Les Misérables) as Beadle Bamford, Nicholas Christopher (Hamilton) as Pirelli / Standby for Sweeney Todd, and Jeanna de Waal (Diana, The Musical) as Standby for Mrs. Lovett and Beggar Woman.

Directed by Thomas Kail, and featuring music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim, with a book by Hugh Wheeler from an adaptation by Christopher Bond, Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street began performances on February 26, 2023, and opened on March 26, 2023, at Broadway’s Lunt-Fontanne Theatre.

Tickets for Groban and Ashford’s final months in the revival are on sale now. Broadway Direct is the primary ticketing provider for Sweeney Todd on Broadway.
