Kerry Butler, Frankie Grande, and More Broadway Stars’ Favorite Onstage Costumes

Theater fans often look to their favorite Broadway shows for Halloween inspiration. So we decided to poll the stars about what their favorite past Broadway looks were.

Frankie Grande (Victor Garber, Titanique)

Last year, I starred in the Diamond Dog Halloween production Horror Camp: A Musical Massacre at the Bourbon Room in Hollywood! I played many roles, but my favorite was Boy George who can be seen here being MURDERED by a monster! I can’t wait to reprise my role this year.

I chose my Penny Pingleton dress as my favorite costume because in the show she is nerdy and wears all these long plaid skirts. But in the end, she gets to show this other side of her. William Ivey Long designed this dress just perfect for my body type and I felt so good wearing it.

My favorite onstage costume has to be the “Roar” outfit because I love anything that sparkles. Also, the glittery knee-high purple boots, come on. I feel like a true pop star sensation in it!

This is one of my favorite costumes I’ve worn in a show. It was my Broadway debut and one of the first times I had something made for ME! It dropped me right into character as the Fortune Teller!

My favorite Broadway show costume was when I was the “Lola” Standby for J. Harrison Ghee on the 1st National Tour of Kinky Boots. These two pictures were taken on the same day. I was at the gym when I found out I was on for Lola and had to quickly shave and get to the theater to look like a fierce Drag Queen!

I loved portraying Glinda in Wicked for so many reasons. But getting to play dress up in her iconic looks created by Susan Hilferty was definitely a highlight.

Once you put Hedwig on, the character completely takes over!

If you need proof that this was one of the scariest costumes on Broadway, just ask the 18 screaming children in the lobby of the then-Hilton Theatre nightly. This was the result of Anthony Ward’s stunning costume design and Angelina Avallone’s incredible make-up design.

Justin David Sullivan (May, & Juliet)

Obviously, my favorite Broadway costume is MAY!

My favorite Broadway costume was my opening look as Satine in Moulin Rouge! The Musical.
