Kinky Boots Draws from Scissor Sisters and Pentatonix

The hit musical Kinky Boots, with a Tony-winning score by Cyndi Lauper and a Tony-winning book by Harvey Fierstein, has just announced its latest cast change. Jake Shears from the pop group Scissor Sisters will assume the role of Charlie Price, beginning January 8, 2018 and ending after a limited engagement on April 1. Joining him on this date will be J. Harrison Ghee who will return to the role of Lola. On February 2, Kirstin Maldonado of the a cappella group Pentatonix will take over the role of Lauren for a limited run that will end April 8.

“I have been dreaming of doing Broadway, and my wish got answered tenfold,” Shears said. “I couldn’t be more excited about doing Kinky Boots on Broadway; it’s going to be a delicious challenge!  Believe it or not, they’re going to be the first stilettos I’ll ever have worn. My feet are so big, I’ve never seen a pair that would actually fit me.”

Maldonado shared, “Being on Broadway has been my ultimate bucket list goal since I was eight years old so I’m so excited to join such an incredible cast to share this special story!”

Tony Award-winner Billy Porter and Tony Award-nominee Stark Sands are currently performing in the show in the original roles they created as “Lola” and “Charlie”, respectively. They will play their final performance on Sunday, January 7, 2018.

Kinky Boots, which won the 2013 Tony Award for Best Musical, tells the story of a young man named Charlie Price who inherits a failing shoe factory when his father suddenly dies. In-order to keep his employees from being laid-off, he must find a way to make the business profitable again. A chance encounter with a fabulous drag queen named Lola who convinces him the time is ripe for Charlie to consider manufacturing boots for the niche drag market. Together, the two establish an unlikely friendship and the business takes-off. Along the way, both men learn a great deal about each other, their differences, and more-importantly, the things they share in-common.
