Miranda to Direct tick, tick…BOOM! Film for Netflix

News has dropped that Tony Award-winner Lin-Manuel Miranda will direct the musical Tick, Tick…BOOM! Miranda appeared in the show for the Encores! Off-Center‘s 2014 turn at the musical for the Netflix streaming platform. It has also been reported by Variety magazine that Tony-winner Andrew Garfield (Angels in America) is being courted to star in the film.

Originating Off-Broadway musical Tick, Tick…BOOM! is a semi-autobiographical story of the late composer Jonathan Larson, who composed, among other things, the 1996 musical phenomenon Rent. The musical explores Larson’s drive as a composer, as well as his challenges along the way. Tony-winner Steven Levenson (Dear Evan Hansen) will write the screenplay for Tick, Tick…BOOM!, evolving the piece to tell more of the personal story behind Larson’s emergence as a musical theatre artist. Miranda and Levenson wrote the teleplay for recent mini-series Fosse/Verdon.

Lin-Manuel Miranda is, of course, well-known for being the creative mind behind such musicals as In the Heights and Hamilton, the former on its way to transitioning from the stage to big screen. Miranda also starred in both of these productions. He appeared in the Disney film musical Mary Poppins Returns and also wrote the score for Disney’s Moana. Miranda is a Tony and Pulitzer Prize winner. Miranda will produce Tick, Tick…BOOM! joined by Imagine Entertainment’s Brian Grazer, Ron Howard, and Julie Oh. Levenson and Julie Larson, (Jonathan Larson’s sister), will serve as executive producers.
