MJ The Musical Announces Broadway Premiere

MJ, a new musical inspired by the life of Michael Jackson, has been rumored to be Broadway-bound for some time. Today, producers have made it official. The jukebox musical, drawing from the canon of hits performed by the pop music superstar, will begin previews on July 6, 2020, toward an opening night of August 13. MJ will have its run at Broadway’s Neil Simon Theatre.

The new musical will feature a book by two-time Pulitzer Prize winner Lynn Nottage (Ruined, Sweat). Tony Award-winner Christopher Wheeldon (An American in Paris) will direct and choreograph. More details about the production, which remains in development at studios in New York City, will be forthcoming. Tickets for MJ The Musical will go on sale on January 15, 2020, at 10 a.m.

Michael Jackson, a controversial and celebrated artist of the pop music industry, started his illustrious career as a child, singing with his siblings in the 60s/70s music group The Jackson 5. As Jackson entered adulthood, he launched a stratospheric solo career, recording such hits as “Beat It,” “Billie Jean,” “Thriller,” “Bad,” “The Way You Make Me Feel,” “The Man in the Mirror,” “Black or White,” and co-wrote “We Are the World” with Lionel Ritchie, a song that served as a fundraising album that brought together popular music superstars, benefitting USA for Africa.
