Rice, Rapp, Cravalho, and Spivey to Star in Mean Girls Movie Musical

The Mean Girls movie adaptation of the Broadway musical is on the way and initial casting has been revealed. Angourie Rice, Reneé Rapp, Auli’i Cravalho, and Jaquel Spivey are all set to star in the movie, which will premiere on Paramount+.

Rice, who will play Cady, the character originally played by Lindsay Lohan, is best known for her role as Betty in the Spider-Man film series, first appearing in Spider-Man: Homecoming in 2017. Rapp takes on the role of Regina George, which she played on Broadway beginning in 2019 through the show’s final performance in 2020. Recently Rapp has been seen on screen in HBO Max’s The Sex Lives of College Girls and also just released her debut EP Everything To Everyone.

Cravalho and Spivey will take to the screen as the iconic duo Janis and Damien. Cravalho has a voice known to many, playing the titular role in Disney’s 2016 film Moana. She will soon be seen on stage in Washington D.C. in The Kennedy Center’s production of Sunset Boulevard. Spivey joins the film straight from his star turn on Broadway in the Tony Award-winning Best Musical A Strange Loop, for which his performance earned him a Tony Award nomination, as well as a Grammy nomination.

Mean Girls premiered on Broadway in 2018, with a book by Tina Fey and score by Jeff Richmond and Nell Benjamin. The show went on to recieve 12 nominations and ran for nearly two years, ultimately playing its final performance on March 11, 2020, and not coming back after the Broadway shutdown.

Fey will return to write the film’s screenplay, with Richmond and Benjamin’s score being used for the movie. Lorne Michaels will produce the film with Samantha Jayne and Arturo Perez Jr. set to direct.
