Schmigadoon!, the musical based on the Emmy Award–winning Apple TV+ series, begins previews at the Nederlander Theatre on April 4, 2026. The musical comedy follows a couple who discover (and get trapped in) Schmigadoon, a magical town living in a 1940s musical. The stage adaptation had its world premiere at the Kennedy Center last spring.

Wondering which Broadway stars are taking on roles first brought to life on screen? Find out below.

Left: Keegan-Michael Key. Right: Alex Brightman.

Josh Skinner

Portrayed by Keegan-Michael Key on screen and Alex Brightman on Broadway

In the series, Josh is an orthopedic surgeon and one half of the central couple. On Broadway, Alex Brightman (School of Rock, Beetlejuice, Spamalot) takes on the role. A true musical hater, Josh finds himself especially out of place in Schmigadoon.

Left: Cecily Strong. Right: Sara Chase.

Melissa Gimble

Portrayed on screen by Cecily Strong and Sara Chase on Broadway

Cecily Strong (Schmigadoon!, Saturday Night Live) played Melissa Gimble in the TV series. Melissa is also a doctor—an OB-GYN, to be specific. Sara Chase (The Great Gatsby, First Date) is originating the role of Melissa Gimble on Broadway. She is very optimistic and tries to make the best of being stuck in Schmigadoon, as she loves musicals.

Left: Kristin Chenoweth. Right: Ana Gasteyer.

Mildred Layton

Portrayed on screen by Kristin Chenoweth and Ana Gasteyer on Broadway

Tony Award winner Kristin Chenoweth dominated the screen as Mildred Layton in the Apple TV+ series. Ana Gasteyer (Once Upon a Mattress, Wicked, Funny Girl) will be portraying Mildred Layton, the show’s main antagonist. Mildred Layton is a powerful manipulator and wants nothing more than to get rid of Josh and Melissa and keep the town under her control.

Left: Ariana DeBose. Right: Isabelle McCalla.

Emma Tate

Portrayed on screen by Ariana DeBose and Isabelle McCalla on Broadway

On screen, Emma Tate was portrayed by Tony Award nominee Ariana DeBose (Hamilton, Summer: The Donna Summer Musical, A Bronx Tale The Musical). Isabelle McCalla (Water for Elephants, Shucked, The Prom) will be making a return to Broadway as Emma Tate, the Schmigadoon schoolteacher who helps Josh and Melissa navigate the town’s strict rules.

Left: Dove Cameron. Right: McKenzie Kurtz.

Betsy

Portrayed on screen by Dove Cameron and McKenzie Kurtz on Broadway

Disney Channel star Dove Cameron played this role in the Apple TV+ series. McKenzie Kurtz (Heathers, The Heart of Rock and Roll, Wicked) is set to play Betsy on Broadway. Betsy is one of the farmer’s daughters who acts well beyond her very ambiguous age. She immediately sets her sights on Josh, which only makes things more complicated.

Left: Aaron Tveit. Right: Max Clayton.

Danny Bailey

Portrayed on screen by Aaron Tveit and Max Clayton on Broadway

Tony Award winner Aaron Tveit (Chess, Moulin Rouge! The Musical, Sweeney Todd) portrayed this role in the TV series. Max Clayton (Chicago, Moulin Rouge! The Musical, Bandstand) will be taking on the role of the beloved Danny Bailey. He is the town’s rapscallion and carnival barker, inviting all to “step right up!” as he takes an interest in Melissa Gimble.

Left: Alan Cumming. Right: Brad Oscar.

Mayor Menlove

Portrayed by Alan Cumming on screen and Brad Oscar on Broadway

Alan Cumming (Threepenny Opera, Macbeth, Cabaret) played Mayor Menlove in the Apple TV+ series. Brad Oscar (Jekyll & Hyde, Big Fish, Something Rotten!) will be taking on the role of Mayor Menlove on the stage. Mayor Menlove is the closeted gay mayor of Schmigadoon.

L&R: Ann Harada.

Florence Menlove

Portrayed by Ann Harada both on screen and Broadway

Ann Harada (Seussical, Avenue Q, 9 to 5) brought Florence Menlove to life in the TV series and will be reprising the role on Broadway. Florence Menlove is the dutiful and oblivious wife of Schmigadoon’s mayor.

Left: Jaime Camil. Right: Ivan Hernandez.

Dr. Lopez “Doc”

Portrayed by Jaime Camil on screen and Ivan Hernandez on Broadway

Jaime Camil (Coco, The Secret Life of Pets, Jane the Virgin) portrayed Dr. Jorge Lopez in the series. Ivan Hernandez (Chicago, Dear Evan Hansen, Never Have I Ever) will be playing Doc on Broadway. He is a judgmental, controlling local doctor, inspired by Captain von Trapp, who reluctantly hires the main character, Melissa, as his nurse.
