The Queen’s Gambit To Be Adapted Into a Broadway Musical

Walter Tevis’ 1983 novel The Queen’s Gambit is on its way to being adapted into a Broadway musical, as announced by Level Forward. Most recently, the novel was adapted into a hit Netflix miniseries.

The Queen’s Gambit tells the story of Beth Harmon, an orphan turned chess prodigy. The novel, published in 1983, depicts Beth’s journey from Kentucky to Paris to Moscow and beyond. It is a chronicle of a young woman’s struggle to overcome a broken past and the demons of addiction, set against the practices and prejudices of a male-centered world.

No dates for the Broadway-aimed The Queen’s Gambit have been announced yet, and casting and the creative team will be announced at a later date.

The TV series received two Golden Globe Awards last week: Best Television Limited Series, Anthology Series, or Motion Picture Made for Television, and Best Performance by an Actress in a Limited Series, Anthology Series, or Motion Picture Made for Television. After four weeks it had become Netflix’s most-watched scripted miniseries.

Level Forward CEO Adrienne Becker and Producer Julia Dunetz said, “It is a privilege for Level Forward to lead the charge of bringing The Queen’s Gambit to the stage through the beloved and enduring craft of musical theater. Told through a brave and fresh point of view, audiences are already sharing in the friendship and fortitude of the story’s inspiring women who energize and sustain Beth Harmon’s journey and ultimate triumph. The story is a siren call amidst our contemporary struggles for gender and racial equity, and we’re looking forward to moving the project forward.”
