#ThrowBackThursday – The Lion King

This week, Broadway Direct brought you behind the scenes of The Lion King. For #ThrowbackThursday, we take you back to the beginning, November 1997.

  • The Lion King opened at the New Amsterdam Theater on November 13th, 1997. In June of 2006, it moved to the Minskoff Theater.
  • The show has run for 6,946 performances (and counting), making it the 4th longest-running show in Broadway history behind Phantom of the Opera, Cats, and Chicago.
  • It was nominated for eleven Tony Awards, winning six, including Best Musical.
  • It is the first Broadway show to ever gross one billion dollars.
