So we’ve arrived at the week of the Tony Awards once again. It has been an incredibly exciting year. Shakespeare is represented multiple times in the nominations, A Raisin in the Sun returned to Broadway, Idina Menzel, Audra McDonald and Jefferson Mays are all nominated for awards, Neil Patrick Harris is anchoring a well-loved yet controversial show, and Hugh Jackman is going to be hosting. Yes, 2004 has been a great year for…what did you say? It’s 2014? Well, while we get ready for the 2014 Tony Awards, let’s take a look back at the ceremony from ten years ago.
- The 58th Tony Awards took place on June 6th, 2004 at Radio City Music Hall.
- The show saw Avenue Q take home three Tony Awards, including Best Musical.
- Avenue Q, Wicked, The Boy from Oz, Caroline, or Change, Fiddler on the Roof, Assassins, and Wonderful Town all performed numbers on the telecast.
- I Am My Own Wife became the first and only one-person play to win the Tony Award for Best Play.
