Hamilton, Lin-Manuel Miranda’s smash hit musical biography of “ten dollar founding father” Alexander Hamilton, won 11 Tony Awards at the 70th annual Tony ceremony on June 12, including Best Musical. Miranda was honored for his Book and Score, and actors Leslie Odom Jr., Daveed Diggs, and Renee Elise Goldsberry won Tonys for their performances in the show. Hamilton fell just short of the record 12 Tonys won by The Producers in 2001.
As expected, Stephen Karam’s The Humans won the Tony for Best Play, and top acting prizes in the play categories were taken home by Jessica Lange (Long Day’s Journey Into Night) and Frank Langella (The Father). The Color Purple was named Best Revival of Musical alongside its Tony-winning leading lady, Cynthia Erivo. The Tony for Best Revival of a Play went to Tony winner Ivo Van Hove’s production of Arthur Miller’s A View from the Bridge.
Host James Corden presided over a Tony ceremony that included performances from 10 musicals and the highly anticipated return of Barbra Streisand, who presented the Best Musical award toHamilton at the close of the CBS-TV telecast.
