After traveling the world, Kyle Ramar Freeman has landed back on Broadway this year, starring as the Lion in the Broadway revival of The Wiz.
When Freeman finished up his run as one of the original understudies in A Strange Loop on Broadway in early 2023, he journeyed to London where he opened up the West End premiere of A Strange Loop, taking on the lead role of Usher. Right after wrapping his time with London, he came back to the States to travel the country in the Pre-Broadway national tour of The Wiz.
Now back in New York, preparing for The Wiz‘s final weeks on Broadway, Freeman answered 5 Questions with Broadway Direct, sharing the inspiration for his career, why the timelessness of The Wiz makes it exciting to see, and what NYC spot he relies on daily.
1. What inspired you to become an actor?
Television and seeing theater inspired me the most. I wanted to bring joy and laughter like I saw so many of my heroes do and turns out I was pretty good at it.
2. Who in your field inspires you?
My peers inspire me, all of us are on the grind and working to get the work and do the work we want to contribute to the world. Their willingness to keep going is the most inspiring.
3. What will audiences be most excited about seeing in The Wiz?
The music. It is timeless and you leave the theater singing it for days. They created something unique and legendary in its own right.
4. If you didn’t need to sleep at night, what would you spend your time doing?
Watching and listening to True Crime. I love it and if I wasn’t in show business I would be solving crime all over the world.
5. What is your favorite NYC spot?
My bed! This city can be exhausting and my bed is always there to completely relax and recharge my body and spirit.
You can catch Kyle Ramar Freeman in The Wiz at the Marquis Theatre through August 18, 2024.
