5 Questions with Michael James Scott of Aladdin

Michael James Scott is no stranger to a Broadway stage, having had many scene-stealing turns in shows like Something Rotten! and The Book of Mormon. He might however be best known for taking on the role of the Genie in Aladdin, having played the role all around the world from Broadway to London all the way to Australia.

Now he is returning to his Broadway roots, rubbing that magic lamp as the Genie one more time to welcome Aladdin back to the New Amsterdam Theatre when it reopens on September 28. Upon his return, he’ll once again be putting on the gorgeous Genie costume made by Eric Winterling, which is currently on display at Showstoppers! Spectacular Costumes from Stage & Screen.

Michael answers 5 questions for Broadway Direct, where he tells us about how he fell in love with showbiz, why he’s excited for audiences to return to Aladdin, and how he has filled his time during the Broadway shutdown.

1. What inspired you to become an actor?

Ever since I sang my first solo in church as a 4-year-old and the congregation started applauding… This little boy was hooked to showbizness. Seeing the effect that can happen to people when you’re telling them a story whether through a song or just dialogue is one of the most incredible feelings in the world. There was never anything else I wanted to do in my life.

2. Who in your field inspires you?

I’ve been inspired by so many people my whole life. The biggest inspiration comes from people who are unapologetically themselves.

3. What will audiences be most excited about seeing in Aladdin?

I think audiences will mostly be excited about the joy that comes from this show. There’s an inedible magical Disney joy that Aladdin brings and it’s so needed right now more than ever.

4. What are some things you’ve always wanted to do that you’re able to spend time on now?

Things like cooking and reading and working on my own music. These were all things I got to do during the craziness of last year, so I’m really letting myself lean into that and figuring out how to keep all those things I focused on during last year and making space for them now.

5. What NYC spot are you missing most now?

Most of the spots I’ve loved are still open, except a couple. I’m trying to embrace the new and create new favorite spots. This is a new time and the idea of moving forward also includes embracing the new.
