Broadway has a huge presence in Hollywood this year! This morning, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association revealed the nominations for the 79th Annual Golden Globe Awards. This being the year of the movie musical, lots of Broadway and musical talent is represented in this year’s nominations.
Leading with the most nominations of the musical contenders, Steven Spielberg’s West Side Story received four nominations, including Best Picture – Musical or Comedy, Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy for Rachel Zegler, Best Supporting Actress – Motion Picture for Ariana DeBose, and Best Director – Motion Picture for Spielberg. At just age 20, Zegler is one of the youngest actresses to ever be nominated for a Golden Globe.
A Broadway veteran and Tony Award winner himself, Andrew Garfield starred in the musical movie tick, tick…BOOM! which earned a nomination for Best Picture – Musical or Comedy as well as a nomination for Garfield in Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy.
The musical movie Cyrano starring Peter Dinklage also received nominations, with the film and Dinklage being nominated in the same two categories as tick, tick…BOOM! Anthony Ramos joins Garfield and Dinklage in the category of Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy, nominated for his performance as Usnavi in In the Heights.
With ties to both tick, tick…BOOM! as director and the creator of In the Heights, Lin-Manuel Miranda also managed to snag a nomination for his work on Encanto, receiving a nomination for Best Original Song for “Dos Oruguitas.”
Other veterans of the Broadway stage and theatre favorites that received nominations include Uzo Aduba, Christine Baranski, Jessica Chastain, Brian Cox, Billy Crudup, Cynthia Erivo, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Steve Martin, Ewan McGregor, Elisabeth Moss, Ruth Negga, Billy Porter, Michaela Jaé Rodriguez, Martin Short, Aaron Sorkin, Emma Stone, Hannah Waddingham, and Denzel Washington.
The winners of the 79th Annual Golden Globe Awards will be announced on January 9, 2022.
