Entertainment One is set to produce a live filming of the Tony Award-winning Broadway musical Come From Away. It will be filmed live at the Gerald Schoenfeld Theatre, where the current Broadway production is staged, and is set for a September 2021 release.
Members of the original Broadway cast are reprising their roles for the filmed version.
On March 12, 2020, the COVID-19 crisis shuttered the Broadway production, on the eve of the musical’s third anniversary.
Featuring a book, music, and lyrics by Irene Sankoff and David Hein, Come From Away is directed by Tony winner Christopher Ashley and choreographed by Kelly Devine. Set against the backdrop of the tragic events of September 11, 2001, the show follows what happens when 38 planes and 6,579 passengers are forced to land in Gander, Newfoundland, doubling the population of “one small town on the edge of the world.”
Christopher Ashley, who directed the Broadway production, will also direct the live filming version. The film will feature musical staging by Olivier Award-winner and two-time Tony Award-nominee Kelly Devine, and music supervision by Olivier Award-winner and Grammy Award-nominee Ian Eisendrath. Alchemy Production Group will oversee the live filming of the musical for eOne, having earlier completed filmed versions of Hamilton for Disney+ and David Byrne’s American Utopia for HBO.
