Both Taylor and Brooks will reprise the roles they played on Broadway. Taylor originally starred as Celie in 2007 following her American Idol win and Brooks played Sofia in the 2015 Broadway revival, earning herself a Tony Award nomination.

The Tony Award-winning Broadway musical, which is itself an adaptation of Alice Walker’s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel, is the basis for the upcoming Warner Bros. film. Blitz Bazawule (Beyoncé’s Black Is King, The Burial of Kojo) will direct the movie, which will have a screenplay by Marcus Gardley (The Chi). The original musical featured a book by Marsha Norman, and music and lyrics by Brenda Russell, Stephen Bray, and the late Allee Willis.

Oprah Winfrey, Steven Spielberg, Scott Sanders, and Quincy Jones are producers of the film with Alice Walker, Rebecca Walker, Mara Jacobs, Carla Gardini, Kristie Macosko Krieger, and Adam Fell executive producing. The film is set to start shooting in Georgia this March and plans to be released in theaters globally on December 20, 2023.
