The Color Purple returns to the big screen this winter in a brand new film adaptation of the Tony Award-winning musical. Take a look at newly-released photos of the upcoming movie, set to release on December 25, 2023.
Fantasia Barrino and Danielle Brooks star as Celie and Sofia, respectively, reprising the roles they played on Broadway. Barrino originally starred as Celie in 2007 following her American Idol win and Brooks played Sofia in the 2015 Broadway revival, earning herself a Tony Award nomination.
The star-studded cast of the film also includes Taraji P. Henson as Shug Avery, Colman Domingo as Mister, Corey Hawkins as Harpo, Halle Bailey as Nettie, and Oscar and Grammy-winning artist H.E.R. as Squeak.
The Tony Award-winning Broadway musical, which is itself an adaptation of Alice Walker’s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel, is the basis for the upcoming Warner Bros. film. Blitz Bazawule (Beyoncé’s Black Is King, The Burial of Kojo) directs the movie, which has a screenplay by Marcus Gardley (The Chi). The original musical featured a book by Marsha Norman, and music and lyrics by Brenda Russell, Stephen Bray, and the late Allee Willis.
