More Cast Recordings on the Way

Last week, we looked at some of the new Broadway cast recordings that will soon be available for fans and theatre aficionados to enjoy. That was only the tip of the iceberg, as almost every new production of the 2016-2017 Broadway season has been given an original cast recording. Here is a continuation of what is coming your way.

Amelie
May 19 (Digital) / June 9 (CD)
Phillipa Soo (recently of Hamilton) is charming audiences as the title character in Amelie, a quiet girl who devotes herself to making magical things happen in the lives of those who surround her. With a score by Daniel Messé, Amelie will receive a May 19th digital release, followed by a CD on June 9th.

Nastasha, Pierre and the Great Comet of 1812 (OBC)
May 19 (Digital and CD)

The Off-Broadway production was already recorded, but on May 19th, fans of Natasha, Pierre, and the Great Comet of 1812 can secure the new cast recording featuring Josh Groban and Denée Benton. Available May 19th for both digital download and on CD, the recording is produced by Reprise Records.

Holiday Inn
May 26 (CD)

The Irving Berlin song catalogue is exhausted with hit tune after hit tune (used to great effect) in Holiday Inn. The Ghostlight Records digital recording is already available for download, but the CD hits the shelves on May 26.  The cast includes Corbin Bleu, Bryce Pinkham, Megan Lawrence, Lora Lee Gayer, Megan Sikora, and Danny Rutigliano.

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory
June 2 (Digital) / June 23 (CD)

The most famous “Candy Man” of them all is back with the Broadway arrival of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory starring Christian Borle as Willy Wonka. With a score by Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman (and peppered with a few of the classic film tunes by Leslie Bricusse and Anthony Newley), Charlie and the Chocolate Factory has been recorded by Masterworks Broadway for a June 2 digital release and a CD version coming June 23.

Anastasia
June 9 (Digital and CD)

The beloved animated film Anastasia has been adapted for Broadway, bringing along many of the classic Lynn Ahrens (lyrics) and Stephen Flaherty (music) songs, as well as introducing new ones. This musical, about the long-lost Russian princess who was presumed dead, and the mystery behind the girl who might just be her, features Christy Altomare, Derek Klena, Ramin Karimloo, John Bolton, Caroline O’Connor, and Mary Beth Peil. The cast recording, digital and CD, comes to us courtesy of Broadway Records on June 9.

Bandstand
June 23 (Digital and CD)

The composing team of Richard Oberacker and Robert Taylor made their Broadway debut this season with Bandstand, a musical that features a score written in the big band/swing style. Telling the story of a post-World War II group of veterans/musicians who come together to compete in a national radio contest, Bandstand has been recorded by Broadway Records/Yellow Sound Label. It releases digitally and on CD on June 23.

War Paint
June (TBD)

Double divas reign supreme as Ghostlight Records preserve Christine Ebersole’s and Patti LuPone’s performances in the new musical War Paint. With a score by Scott Frankel (music) and Michael Korie (lyrics), the musical explores the story of cosmetics mavens Helena Rubinstein and Elizabeth Arden. War Paint will be releases in June (date TBD).

Sunday in the Park with George
(Summer, 2017)

Jake Gyllenhaal took Broadway by storm this spring with his portrayal of artist Georges Seurat in a revival of the Stephen Sondheim/James Lapine Pulitzer Prize-winning musical Sunday in the Park with George. Co-starring Annaleigh Ashford, the production has been preserved by Warner Music Group and is expected to debut sometime during the summer of 2017.
