It has been revealed today that Here We Are, the highly-anticipated final musical of the late legendary composer Stephen Sondheim, will premiere this September in New York City at The Shed’s Griffin Theatre.

Stephen Sondheim first announced plans for his new musical in September 2021 on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, calling it Square One at the time. The musical will feature a book by David Ives and direction by Joe Mantello. Here We Are is inspired by the two films The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie and The Exterminating Angel by Luis Buñuel.

The strictly limited engagement will begin September 2023 in The Shed’s Griffin Theater. Ticket on-sale information and casting will be announced soon.

The late Stephen Sondheim, a legend of the theater, is currently represented on Broadway with the revival of Sweeney Todd starring Josh Groban and Annaleigh Ashford, with another one of his musicals, Merrily We Roll Along, heading back to Broadway this fall. A Broadway and a West End theater are named in his honor as a result of a career that garnered eight Tony Awards, a Lifetime Achievement Tony Award, an Academy Award, eight Grammy Awards, an Olivier Award, and the Pulitzer Prize for Drama.
