Wicked Starring Cynthia Erivo & Ariana Grande to Be Two Movies

Sweet Oz! We have received an update on the long-anticipated Wicked movie adaptation from director Jon M. Chu. Instead of being adapted as one movie, the story will be split into two separate films.

In a statement, Chu said “as we prepared this production over the last year, it became increasingly clear that it would be impossible to wrestle the story of Wicked into a single film without doing some real damage to it. As we tried to cut songs or trim characters, those decisions began to feel like fatal compromises to the source material that has entertained us all for so many years. So we decided to give ourselves a bigger canvas and make not just one Wicked movie but TWO!”

He continued, “With more space, we can tell the story of WICKED as it was meant to be told while bringing even more depth and surprise to the journeys of these beloved characters.”

This comes after the announcement heard around the world when it was revealed that Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande would be starring as Elphaba and Glinda in the movie adaptation.

The Wicked film will be directed by Jon M. Chu, who helmed the recently released In the Heights film adaptation. Original composer Stephen Schwartz will adapt the screenplay with Winnie Holzman, who wrote the book for the musical, and producer of the musical, Marc Platt, is set to produce the film. Wicked is now set to be released on successive Christmas holidays, with the first of the two coming to theaters December 2024.
