Andrew Garfield, Ariana DeBose, & Encanto Among 2022 Oscar Nominees

Broadway has gone to Hollywood! The nominations for the 94th Academy Awards were revealed this Tuesday morning, with many Broadway and theatre favorites among the names being called.

Steven Spielberg’s West Side Story made the biggest splash, receiving nominations for Best Picture, Director (Spielberg), Costume Design (Tony Award winner Paul Tazewell), Cinematography (Janusz Kamiński), Sound (Tod A. Maitland, Gary Rydstrom, Brian Chumney, Andy Nelson, and Shawn Murphy), and Production Design (Adam Stockhausen and Rena DeAngelo). The movie adaptation’s seven nominations also include one for Tony Award nominee and Golden Globe Award winner Ariana DeBose, who received her first Oscar nomination for Best Actress in a Supporting Role for her performance as Anita in the film.

tick, tick…BOOM! also showed up in the nominations, receiving a Best Actor in a Leading Role nomination for Andrew Garfield’s stunning turn as Jonathan Larson, as well as a nomination for Best Film Editing (Myron Kerstein and Andrew Weisblum).

Lin-Manuel Miranda is only an Oscar away from achieving EGOT status and this could be his year to claim that title. The director behind tick, tick…BOOM! received a nomination for Best Original Song for “Dos Oruguitas” from Encanto. The animated musical film also received nominations for Best Animated Feature and Best Original Score (Germaine Franco).

Other theatre favorites nominated include Jessica Chastain, Nicole Kidman, Benedict Cumberbatch, and Denzel Washington in the Lead Acting categories, with Jessie Buckley, Judi Dench, and J.K. Simmons nominated in the Supporting Acting categories.

The Oscar winners will be announced during the 94th Academy Awards on March 27. The ceremony will take place at the Dolby Theatre and air on ABC at 8 p.m. EST. Find out the full list of nominees here.
