Ahead of the opening night of The Lost Boys on Broadway, Broadway Direct is excited to give audiences an exclusive look inside the mind of the show’s costume designer Ryan Park and his sketches of the many costumes featured in the thrilling musical.
The one thing many people will know about The Lost Boys going in is that vampires are heavily involved, and bringing vampires to Broadway is no easy task. In the musical, the titular Lost Boys (a.k.a. the vampires) are a rock band, and for their costumes, Park heavily leaned into the aesthetics of ’80s rock ’n’ roll and punk. “The lifestyle of a vampire isn’t all that different from that of rock idols: they sleep all day; they’re mysterious, dangerous, and sexy,” he tells Broadway Direct. “Billy Idol, Black Sabbath, Steven Tyler, and Guns N’ Roses are key benchmarks.”
“I designed these costumes to draw you in – to make you want to get closer to these characters, to be transfixed by them, and to examine their textures and depths… because that’s what every good vampire does before they bite.”
The Lost Boys is based on the 1987 film of the same name, which has a very loyal cult following. “Susan Becker, the costume designer of the film, created such iconic looks that are beloved by fans, and her work served as a strong jumping-off point for us.” Translating the story to Broadway, Park was inspired by the show’s writers, who expanded the film’s story for the musical, to expand the visual layers for the stage.
“In theater, design has to exist beyond the frame of the camera. The Palace Theatre is a large house, and the visual impact of the costumes must play equally well to someone in the fifth row of the orchestra and to someone in the last row of the balcony.”
While Park has worked on various costume design teams on Broadway over the last 15 years, The Lost Boys marks his first time taking the lead as costume designer. “It means so much to me. I feel incredibly fortunate to have had the opportunity to work with so many skilled craftspeople, makers, artists, and collaborators—people who bring their own artistry to everything they do, whether that’s making clothes, hats, or any number of specialized pieces.”
