What is Gypsy about?

Gypsy is a renowned Broadway musical based on the memoirs of legendary burlesque artist and stripper Gypsy Rose Lee. It tells the story of a stage mom, Rose, in the 1920s and ‘30s seeking stardom with her two daughters, June and Louise. Relationships strain and the highs and lows of stardom are revealed as they navigate the vaudeville and burlesque circuits. Mother Rose is forced to reconcile her own dreams of fame with her daughters’ desires for anonymity in this story of sacrifice, ambition, and family relationships within the entertainment world.

Five-time Tony Award winning director George C. Wolfe brings this story back to life for its sixth Broadway run, featuring a book by Tony Award winner Arthur Laurents, music by Tony and Academy Award winner Jule Styne, and lyrics by Tony, Grammy, Academy Award and Pulitzer Prize winner Stephen Sondheim. Wolfe will work with the four-time Tony Award-nominated choreographer (including for the currently running musical Hell’s Kitchen) Camille A. Brown.
