Steven Sater and Duncan Sheik’s groundbreaking musical Spring Awakening, based on the play by Frank Wedekind, is coming to Off-Broadway for 12 weeks only this fall.

The highly-anticipated revival of the fan-favorite musical finally arrives Off-Broadway after the production garnered online attention for its two-day open call auditions in July, which saw over 2,500 performers. The original Broadway production of the show, which opened 20 years ago this year, took home eight Tony Awards including Best Musical during the 2006-2007 season.

What is Spring Awakening Off-Broadway about?

Spring Awakening follows a group of late 19th century German adolescents as they explore teenage sexuality and repression through a contemporary rock score. Returning the musical to the urgency of Frank Wedekind’s once-banned 1891 play, this production will explore the experience of young people caught between desire, fear, and discovery.

Spring Awakening will begin preview performances on November 27, 2026, with an official opening on December 17, 2026.

The principal cast of Spring Awakening includes Jack Bateman as Georg, Jada Simone Clark (Cabaret) as Thea, Leif Coomer as Ernst, Ryo Kamibayashi (Oh, Mary!) as Moritz, Ashlyn Maddox (Parade) as Wendla, Nando Morland (Wicked) as Otto, Antonio Porciello as Hanschen, Khadija Sankoh (Little Shop of Horrors) as Martha, Grace Slear (The Queen of Versailles) as Anna, Tyler Jordan Wesley as Melchior, and Amalia Yoo (John Proctor is the Villain) as Ilse.

Bateman and Porciello were among the cast members selected from the production’s open casting call in July, where 2,532 performers were seen.


Who is on the creative team of Spring Awakening Off-Broadway?

With a book and lyrics written by Steven Sater and music by Duncan Sheik, Spring Awakening will be directed by Tony Award–winning director Danya Taymor, with choreography by Celia Rowlson-Hall and music supervision by Or Matias

Joining the creative team are scenic designers Christine Jones & Brett Banakis, costume designer Kaye Voyce, lighting designer Brian MacDevitt, sound designer Cody Spencer, special effects designer Jeremy Chernick, music director Cynthia Meng, music coordinator David Lai, intimacy coordinator Ann James, fight coordinator Drew Leary, creative consultant C.A. Johnson, associate director Miranda Cornell, and voice & text coach Gigi Buffington.

Casting is by The TRC Company/Xavier Rubiano, CSA and Peter Van Dam, CSA. Elizabeth Allen serves as the Production Stage Manager. Sean Gorski/Hudson Theatrical Associates serves as Production Manager with Jonathan Whitton/Seaview as General Manager.
