Moulin Rouge! to Play Chicago

The red windmill will soon be spinning in the Windy City when the hit Broadway production Moulin Rouge! The Musical makes its way to Chicago next year. A limited-engagement of the jukebox musical extravaganza will play Broadway in Chicago’s James M. Nederlander Theatre. The production will run from December 17, 2020, through February 21, 2021. Casting will be announced at a later date.

“After ten years in development, the fantastic response to Moulin Rouge! The Musical in New York is mind-blowing,” said producer Carmen Pavlovic, and continued, “We’re keen to share the enthusiasm for Moulin Rouge! The Musical across the country. It’s thrilling that a second company will be going out to audiences across North America just one year after the Broadway opening.”

Moulin Rouge! The Musical opened at Broadway’s Al Hirschfeld Theatre on July 25, 2019, under the direction of Alex Timbers (Beetlejuice, Peter and the Starcatcher). Drawing its inspiration from the blockbuster 2001 film of the same name, the show has a book by John Logan (Tony Award for Red), choreography by Sonya Tayeh (Lucille Lortel Award and Obie Award for Kung Fu, and Emmy winner), and music supervision, orchestrations and arrangements by Justin Levine (Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson). The design team for Moulin Rouge! The Musical includes Derek McLane (sets), Catherine Zuber (costumes), Justin Townsend (lighting), and Peter Hylenski (sound).

At the Parisian nightclub named The Moulin Rouge, love, jealousy, truth, and beauty converge in one place as its glamorous star Satine and the young, bohemian composer Christian find themselves in a star-crossed romance. Over 80 pop songs are assembled to create the score for this theatrical spectacle of song, dance, and drama.

Lou Raizin, President of Broadway In Chicago said, “It is most exciting that Chicagoans will be among the first to see this amazing show outside of New York.”
