This week, we rewind the clock to November of 1977.
The original production of Jesus Christ Superstar opened at the Mark Hellinger Theatre (now the Times Square Church) on November 23rd, 1977.
- The show ran for 711 performances before closing on June 30th, 1973.
- The show starred Ben Vereen as Judas, Yvonne Elliman as Mary and Jeff Fenholt as Jesus. The chorus featured Samuel E. Wright, who would go on to fame as the voice of Sebastian in The Little Mermaid, and Ted Neeley, who would go on to play the role of Jesus over 5,000 times.
- The show was nominated for five Tony Awards at the 1972 Tony Awards.
