This week, we rewind the clock to December of 1981.

  • The original production of Dreamgirls opened at the Imperial Theatre on December 20th, 1981.
  • The show ran for 1,521 performances before closing on August 11th, 1985.
  • The show starred Jennifer Holliday as Effie White, Sheryl Lee Ralph as Deena Jones and Loretta Devine as Lorrell Robinson. The ensemble featured Phylicia Rashad in her third Broadway show.
  • The show was nominated for thirteen Tony Awards at the 1982 Tony Awards, winning 6, although the show lost Best Musical to Nine.
